TORRINGTON – Despite setbacks from COVID-19, Valley Christian School prevailed and hosted a fundraiser and charity auction to benefit the community and the school. The school offered raffle tickets for a Hustler Raptor Mower, with the option of a 42” or 52” deck, and a $750 shopping spree at Main Street Market.
The auction was conducted virtually on Saturday, Feb. 6, while the drawings for the raffles were held on Monday, Feb. 15. Gary Stahl was announced as the raffle winner for a Hustler Raptor Mower and Polly Mirich was announced as the raffle winner of the Main Street Market $750 shopping spree.
On Saturday afternoon, March 6, Mirich readied her shopping cart at Main Street Market. Store employees announced there would be a shopping spree going on and to steer clear of the shopper. Mirich was given the go-ahead and immediately began her 180-second run through the store.
She filled up her cart with a variety of foods from throughout the store and eventually ended up in the checkout line where a team of cashiers made the final tally.
“I bought five tickets from my neighbor boy, Will Cochran, as I have for the past three years,” Mirich said.
Two to three weeks after purchasing tickets, Mirich was called and informed she had been drawn for the shopping spree.
“I got a call from the school and wondered why they would be calling me, because I didn’t have any kids in school,” Mirich said. “I answered and I learned I had won the raffle.”
She said she didn’t make many preparations but had an idea of what she wanted.
“I try to shop here as often as possible. I made a list of the aisles I wanted to go down,” Mirich said. “Then I got here and realized I forgot the list at home!”
Mirich pointed out she had made sure to purchase food and snacks for the children in her family, as she proudly pointed out some fruit snacks and gummy treats.
