Sprecher signs with Northern Michigan

TORRINGTON – Eastern Wyoming College sophomore golfer Russel Sprecher signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his golf career at the Northern Michigan University on Tuesday afternoon.

Sprecher, a Kelly Walsh High School graduate, has been a nice surprise for the Lancers the past two seasons.

“It was a pretty long process for me. I had a couple bumps in the road,” Sprecher said. “Their coach gave me a really good offer, and it’s a pretty good program. I’m excited to go play there.”

Northern Michigan is an NCAA Division II located in Marquette, who plays in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Wildcats have finished in the top five in four tournaments this season.

In his time at Eastern Wyoming, Sprecher has four wins to his name and eight top five to his resume, earning All-Region IX honors both years.

“Russel has been awesome since he’s been here. I’ve told him one day, ‘You’ve surprised me with how well you’ve played.” I didn’t expect some of the great play with him winning multiple tournaments since he’s been here,” EWC coach Zach Smith said. “He’s preformed since day one. He’s more or less a local, and he’s a character on and off the golf course.”

However, Sprecher will join four other teammates – Brendan Thomas, Johannes Lindstrom, Remington Newell and Joshua Wiese – for one more tournament as a Lancer.

Next week, Sprecher will participate in the NJCAA National Golf Championship for the second time in his career.

“It’s been awesome,” Sprecher said. “I want to thank coach (Zach) Smith for giving me the opportunity to come here and taking a chance on me. Being only two hours away from home helps me quite a bit. If I need something, I can go home, but it’s far enough away I feel like I’m separated. Weather is the same, just less windy.”

Sprecher plans to major in either business administration or finance.
