Southeast sweeps Lady Doggers

YODER – Leading the match 2-0, the Southeast Lady Cyclones found themselves down 10-7 to cross-county rival Lingle-Fort Laramie in the third set, and Southeast coach Roxanne Jolovich called a timeout to settle her team down.

Coming out of the timeout, the Lady Cyclones went on an 8-2 run and never trailed again, knocking off the Lady Doggers, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20).

“We’ve been talking about taking it one ball at a time, one point at a time,” Jolovich said. “So, we stopped, came back and grouped together and worked on one point at a time.”

Outside of the first 17 points in the third set, the rest of the match belonged to Southeast.

“I think the girls did a really good job of coming out and playing as a team no matter who went in and in what position,” Jolovich said. “Everyone did their job and that is what makes us a team and helps us win.”

In the opening set, the Southeast senior Hailey Anderson set the tone with a kill to open the game as the Lady Cyclones jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage.

“She does a good job,” Jolovich said. “She is a good team leader for us. She is one of our leading hitters, but we are working on more versatile in having more options in the front row than just one.”

Lingle struggled to find any offensive rhythm.

“We did not pass the ball well, so we were out of system most game,” L-FL coach Barb Clark said. “Our setters were having to run everywhere and never got good swings on the ball.”

The Lady Doggers managed to cut the deficit to as few as 6-4 following an ace by L-FL junior Kalli Nichol.

Over the remainder of the set, Southeast slowly pulled away for the set win.

In the second set, Southeast never trailed, but Lingle kept things close.

A serving ace from Paige Forkner tied the set at eight apiece, but like the first set, the Lady Cyclones pulled away, using an 11-4 spurt to put some distance between the visitors.

In the third set, Lingle grabbed an early 3-1 lead after an attack error by Southeast.

It was a lead the Lady Doggers held on to until Southeast called a timeout trailing 10-7.

“We had it going, and when things are going our way, we do alright,” Clark said.

Southeast responded with an 8-2 run, finishing off the Lady Doggers with a pair of kills by senior Ellie Schmitt.

“Once Hailey went out, we needed another hitter. We were kind of getting in trouble with our serve receive so I switched things up and the change seemed to help us,” Jolovich said.

The loss was the first of the season for the Lady Doggers, who drop to 5-1, while the Lady Cyclones improved to 5-2.

Both teams are back in action on Friday as Southeast heads to Mitchell, Neb. for a 4:30 p.m. contest, while Lingle travels to Sioux County, Neb. for a 5:30 p.m. match.
