Southeast Lady Cyclones reach semis in Big Horn Invite

BIG HORN – The Southeast Lady Cyclones earned the fourth seed in the maroon bracket after pool play Friday, where they reached the semi-finals before falling to Sundance on Saturday at the Sundance Invitational.

The Lady Cyclones opened pool play, which was two sets per match regardless of win or lose, with a narrow win over Upton in two sets, 25-23 and 25-21. Against Tongue River in the second game of the weekend, Southeast split sets, winning the first 25-11, before dropping the second 25-22. The Lady Cyclones closed out pool play with a two-set win over Shoshoni, 25-16 and 25-19.

After Friday’s pool play, the Lady Cyclones were the fourth seed in the Maroon Bracket, where the top-eight teams were seeded. In the bracket, matches were best two out of three. Starting bracket play, Southeast squared off against Lovell, picking up the two-set win, 25-22 and 25-19, advancing to the semi-finals. Sundance was on the other side of the court for the semi-finals and handed the Lady Cyclones a two-set loss, 25-16 and 25-22.

Hailey Anderson was a killing machine at the net, racking up a team-high 49 kills and contributing two blocks. She was also a force in the back line, pacing the Lady Cyclones in digs, with 31. At the service line, the junior racked up seven aces, which was another team-high.

Fellow junior Ellie Schmitt was second on the team in both kills (22) and digs (29). Schmitt did pace Southeast in assists, with 51 on the weekend, paired with four aces and three blocks. Kassidy McClun chipped in in the assist department, accounting for 17. She rounded out her stat line with four kills, 14 digs, five aces and two blocks.

Kylie Carson led the way in blocks over the weekend, with five. She also chipped in six kills and three digs. Whitney Foos and Macie Murphy combined for 10 kills, 28 digs and five aces over the five games. Kelci Lovercheck also added 18 digs of her own.

With the Big Horn Invite in the books, the Lady Cyclones sit at 6-4 on the young season, with a 1-0 record in the conference. Southeast returns to action Saturday in the Lusk Invitational. The games are set to get underway at 9 a.m.
