MITCHELL, Neb. – The Southeast High School volleyball team won the first set on Tuesday evening against the Mitchell, but the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Cyclones in three straight sets to hand Southeast a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-11) road loss.

Southeast falls to Mitchell

MITCHELL, Neb. – The Southeast High School volleyball team won the first set on Tuesday evening against the Mitchell, but the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Cyclones in three straight sets to hand Southeast a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-11) road loss.

The Lady Cyclones came out swinging in the opening set, taking an early 5-0 lead.

Junior Shelby Ekwall got Southeast on the scoreboard, and junior Brenna Herring added ace, to go a long with a pair of blocks from senior Jordan Stoddard.

Mitchell chipped away at the deficit and took a 12-10 lead following a 6-1 run but kills by Stoddard and Herring tied the match. The scores sparked an 8-1 run.

Southeast never trailed again for the remainder of the set.

In the second set, Mitchell never trailed, scoring the first point of the set.

In the third, Southeast raced out to a 4-1 behind early points from Ekwall and sophomore Sasha Haines. The Lady Cyclones until Mitchell scored five straight points, forcing Southeast to use one of its two timeouts.

Southeast battled back and took a brief lead at 16-15 thanks to another kill from Ekwall, but the lead was short-lived as the Lady Tigers used a 7-1 spurt to pull away late in the set.

In the fourth set, Southeast led 8-7 following a block point from senior Grace Desmond, but Mitchell owned the rest of the match, outscoring the Lady Cyclones 18-3.

Stoddard led the team with eight kills, while Herring, junior Sydney Anderson and Ekwall added five apiece. Herring tallied a team-high 11 assists, Stoddard and Desmond had 16 digs and three blocks each.

The Lady Cyclones (7-4) host Pine Bluffs (4-9) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. for Homecoming, before traveling to Lusk for the Lusk Invite on Saturday, which begins at 9 a.m.
