TORRINGTON – America's favorite bear, no – not the picnic stealing bear, the other bear, Smokey the Bear, is kicking off his 78th birthday in Torrington on Wednesday, August 3 at the Torrington Telegram.

Smokey the Bear turns 78 on August 9, and he is bringing his firefighting friends with him to the Telegram for a quick visit from 10 to roughly 10:30 a.m.

While at the newsroom, Smokey and his friend, U.S. Bureau of Land Management for Wyo./Colo. Fire Mitigation and Public Relations Specialist Carmen Thomason, will read two stories to guests: The Real Story of Smokey the Bear, and fan-favorite, Brown Bear Brown Bear.

Afterwards, Smokey and Thomason will hand out coloring and activity pages and special Smokey the Bear swag for him to share with Torrington for his birthday.

According to Thomason, Smokey the Bear remains the best resource for children to help mitigate wildfires.

Smokey is very busy helping firefighters put out the fires here in Wyoming. Due to an active fire season, Smokey wanted to let residents know that his birthday bash in Torrington could be rescheduled or postponed depending on if he needs to help his friends fight fires or not.
