TORRINGTON – Halloween gave kids and dogs alike the chance to dress up for a night of tricks and treats. Penny Hutchison and Dave Reynolds, who teach dog obedience and agility through Eastern Wyoming College’s Community Education program, hosted a Halloween costume contest for the students of the current level 1 fall dog obedience class.
Reynolds and Hutchison normally keep classes structured but were asked if this class could include costumes for the dogs. “Somebody in class asked if we would be doing a costume contest and we decided that it would be fun,” Hutchison said.

Thursday’s costume contest winners were: first place, Gary Felton and “Reba the Purple Mermaid,” second place, T.J. Christopher and “Shiloh with NASA,” third place, Matt Schubarth and “Raven the S’more,” and fourth place, Jaycee Myrtle and “Mocha the California Girl.”
The classes offer community members the opportunity to learn with their dogs. The classes are structured to provide the pairs a controlled environment to learn the commands and expectations together.
Donna White, Director of EWC’s Community Education program, says, “the class is as much for the owner as it is for the dog, and the dogs seem to enjoy it.”
Hutchison and Reynolds have been teaching through EWC since 2010. Before going to work with EWC, Hutchison taught dog obedience independently in Torrington since 1993 and in Omaha, Neb., since 1969.
Level 1 obedience classes are offered through EWC three times each spring and three times each fall, and each class has seven sessions. Level two is available depending upon interest and completion of level one. Dog agility is also offered every year.
