TORRINGTON – Funeral services for Shirley E. Nighswonger, 79, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Matt Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. 

Shirley died June 6, 2018 at the Goshen Healthcare Community. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the 4-H Foundation. Visitation will be Friday at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. and the casket will be open prior to the service at the church.

Shirley was born July 16, 1938, in Huntley, the daughter of Adam and Katie (Henkel) Brockel. She grew up and received her education in Huntley and Torrington, graduating Torrington High School in 1956. She met Thomas Nighswonger at a street dance and they were married on Sept. 19, 1954, in Torrington. 

She worked many years at Smith’s Cleaners with her mother. She later became the secretary for the Goshen County Fair and then worked at the University of Wyoming Extension office. She retired in 2004.

Shirley enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening, card playing – especially Bridge – Polka dancing and attending her children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s events. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and several bridge clubs.

Shirley is survived by her sons Ron (Becky) Nighswonger, Terry (Diane) Nighswonger and Steve (Julie) Nighswonger all of Torrington; her daughter Cindy (Mort) Tillman of Wheatland; sisters Helen Arntt of Torrington and Rose Morrison of Cheyenne; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Tom; two brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; two nephews; and one niece.
