YODER – The Southeast and Lingle-Fort Laramie boys’ basketball teams found themselves in a battle of runs in the early going, but ultimately, it was the Cyclones who pulled away for a 52-36 win over the cross-county rival Doggers.
Southeast opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers by seniors Durward Randall and Bodie Herring to grab a quick 6-0 lead, but the visiting Doggers countered with six straight points of their own.
With the game tied at six with 4:18 left in the opening quarter, Herring sparked another Southeast run to push its lead back to six at 12-6.
L-FL sophomore Boyd Oliver hit a buzzer-beating layup at the end of the frame, while seniors Cooper Hill and Ty Prall tied the game at 12 early in the second.
With 6:26 left in before halftime, the Doggers took their only lead of the evening courtesy of two points from sophomore Corey Ducheneaux.
On the ensuing possession, Southeast senior Hayden Anderson tied the game at 14, and it was the start of 13 straight points by the Cyclones.
Southeast’s lead remained at double digits through halftime.
Dogger senior Cordell Forkner’s triple drew the team back within eight.
That proved to be as close as L-FL came the rest of the evening.
Anderson countered with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to double digits for remainder of the game.
Anderson and Herring led the Cyclones with 14 points, while junior Cord Herring added seven. Senior Reece Robertson and Randall tallied six apiece. Herring grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
On the other side of the floor, Prall led the Dogger with 12 points, while Forkner had seven. Freshman Nolan Spears had seven rebounds.
The Cyclones (7-7) returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. in Glenrock (2-9).
Doggers fall to Glenrock, Pine Bluffs
Last week, the Doggers were also in action against the Glenrock Herders and Pine Bluffs Hornets.
L-FL fell 59-39 to the Herders on Friday and 56-35 to the Hornets on Saturday.
Against Glenrock, the Doggers held a 31-27 lead at halftime before scoring only two points in the third quarter and eight for the remainder of the game.
In the second half, the Herders outscored L-FL 32-8 to pull away for the 20-point victory.
Forkner led the Doggers with 17 points, while Hill and Spears added eight points each.
The next day, Lingle fell behind early in the 21-point loss. The Hornets jumped out to a 14-5 lead, pushing the lead to 32-13 by halftime.
The Doggers chipped away at the lead in the third quarter, but it was all for naught as Pine Bluffs outscored L-FL 16-7 over the final eight mintues.
Forkner and Hill led the team with nine points apiece, while sophomore Owen Schilreff had six points.
