Second half dispels EWC

RIVERTON – After trailing 45-42 after the first half, the Eastern Wyoming College Lancers let the game slip away in the second half Friday, falling 100-78 against Central Wyoming College.

The Lancers jumped out to an early lead, with a three-pointer by Nick Holmes putting the team up 12-5 with 15:35 left in the first half. The Rustlers rallied to take a 17-16 lead with 12:07 to go before halftime. The two teams traded several buckets and a three-pointer by Walker Korell tied the game at 32 with 5:58 to go in the first.

Chad Hinrichs hit a shot with 2:21 left to give EWC their final lead of the game at 39-36. The Lancers went into the break down 45-42.

The Lancers kept things tight in to open the second half, including another three-pointer by Korell that brought the deficit to 57-54. Once EWC reached 58 points, they hit a dry spell, going scoreless for four minutes and then they were down 79-59. The Rustlers went on to a 100-78 win.

Korell and Jonathan Morrobel both finished with 21 points on the night. Korell went 5-of-9 from behind the arc, while also accounting for four boards. Morrobel paced EWC with nine rebounds on the night.

Nick Holmes was the final Lancer in double-figures, amassing 18 points, including nine from three-point land and seven from the charity stripe. Holmes rounded out his stat sheet with two rebounds and three assists. Trey Schroefel paced EWC with six assists and two steals on the night, along with a rebound. Rounding out the starters, Alek Cosic turned in two points.

Brandon Meadows came off the bench to tally nine points and three rebounds. Hinrichs chipped in four points, three boards and a steal, while Daniel Wright, Kolton Wall and Rhythm Ajanku combined for four points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

WWCC 89, EWC 82

The Lancers had another solid first half Saturday against the Mustangs, taking a 41-41 tie into halftime, before being outscored 48-41 in the second half to fall on the road 89-82.

Morrobel turned in 15 points in the loss, including eight from the charity stripe. He also had four rebounds. Ajanku tied Morrobel in the scoring column, accounting for 15 points of his own on 6-of-10 shooting. Ajanku tied for the team lead on the boards, with six rebounds.

Meadows had 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting and he was another Lancer with six rebounds, along with a block. Korell was the final starter in double-figures, chipping in 12 points, including six from behind the arc, a rebound and a steal.

Rounding out the starters, Wright had six points, while Cosic added four points and six boards.

Wall poured in nine points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Holmes kicked in another seven points. The two combined for three rebounds and a steal.

EWC now sits at 1-12 on the season and have lost nine-straight. The Lancers’ next action comes in 2018 when they host Trinidad State Junior College on Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Laramie County Community College on Jan. 6 at 4 p.m.
