Rooster Boosters continue education and safety efforts

TORRINGTON – Once again the Goshen County Rooster Booster organization brought hundreds of people together to promote hunter safety as well as community spirit. Only the 2017 version had a special twist – fund raising for a family with extensive medical costs.

According to Booster President Jasen Kaufman, the banquet always features a large auction as a way to raise money for local projects. This year’s event included two items with a
special purpose.

Torrington resident, Juel Afdahl, an instructor at Torrington High School, was flown to a Denver Hospital last month after suffering a seizure at school. Two masses were removed from his brain and he is waiting for test results and undergoing treatment while recuperating at home.

The situation inspired a movement among Rooster Boosters to raise funds to help the Afdahl family cover the mounting medical expenses.

In a collaboration between Bloedorn Lumber in Torrington and the Lingle Fort Laramie High School construction class, Bloedorn donated an 8X8 foot wood shed, that was purchased by Schlagel Manufacturing, then resold and purchased by High-Pointe Electric, and sold again to Shawn Allen. In addition, a tool rental was sold several times.

The total result is a $14,450 donation to the Afdahl family.

The Lingle-Fort Laramie High School construction class donated their skills to build the shed for the new owner.

L-FL construction class instructor John Gibson said the young men have previously put up the sheds, but wanted to do something special to help the Afdahl’s since Juel has done so much for local youth. Their solution was to donate their time and skills toward its construction.

Gibson said he was especially interested because of his friendship with Afdahl during their years as teachers in the Goshen County school district.

“The class has built the sheds for Bloedorn for several years,” Gibson explained Monday afternoon. “I talked to Jason Knowles, manager at Bloedorn’s, about the auction and he agreed to the idea.

“I was elated,” Gibson said. “It is a wonderful opportunity to give back to him (Afdahl), and the class is excited.”

Class members are: Mason McFadden, Bailey Powell, Ashely Riley, Savannah Mirich, Alex Pugsley, Caeden Riley, Gage Correa, Dagan Davis, Miles Limmer, Zane Rising, Cole Shepardson, and Braday Wagner.

Tuesday morning, Kaufman said that although a total amount for the entire evening’s auctions and activities is not yet available he is pleased with another
successful event.
