Rally falls short for EWC women

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – After trailing 35-19 at halftime, the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers picked things up in the second half, but the comeback fell short Saturday, losing to Western Nebraska Community College, 74-64.

The Lady Cougars came out of the gates hot, pouring in 21 points in the first frame, while limiting EWC to 13. Both teams’ scoring slowed in the second quarter, but WNCC still outscored their visitors 14-6 to take a 35-19 lead into intermission.

The Lady Lancers made some halftime adjustments and put up 21 points in the third quarter, outscoring WNCC by two points. They outscored the Lady Cougars again in the fourth quarter, 24-20, but it was not enough to bring the Lady Lancers back into the game, losing 74-64.

In the loss, Abril Rexach Roure had a stellar game, pouring in 29 points. She shot 11-of-21 from the field, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc. On top of her points, Rexach piled up three boards, two assists and a steal.

Pamela Bethel was the only other Lady Lancer in double-figures, tallying 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. She paced EWC in rebounds with eight to her credit, while also recording three assists.

Lauren O’Connell was third on the team in scoring with nine points. She rounded out her stat line with seven boards, three assists and a steal. Ines Salat Margarit and Macie Mackey rounded out the starters for EWC, combining for six points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Margarit led the team in both assists (5) and steals (2).

Nicole Cutler was the only Lady Lancer to score off the bench, tallying two points on the night. Cutler, Cathlyn Knutson and Emily Buchanan combined for three boards and three assists from the bench.

The loss snapped the Lady Lancers’ six-game winning streak, putting them at 8-5 on the season. EWC played Casper College on Tuesday after press time. The Lady Lancers don’t return to the hardwood until the new year, hosting Trinidad State Junior College on Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
