Quilts returns for 25th annual show

TORRINGTON – A popular annual event will celebrate the quarter-century mark next month.

Quilts Along the Platte, hosted by the Goshen County Quilters, returns for the 25th year to the Goshen County Rendezvous Center at the Fairgrounds in Torrington, Friday through Sunday, Sept. 14-16. And this year’s show promises to be bigger and better.

“It looks like it’s going to be our biggest year,” said Jane Born, Goshen County Quilters show chairperson. “We have 166 entries this year, and not all big quilts, some smaller items.

“But there are a lot of big quilts this year,” she said. “This is the year of the big quilts.”

Previous entry records reached into the 150’s before, Born said. But this year’s entries broke those old records.

The entries come primarily from Goshen County, with several from surrounding counties and western Nebraska. Typically, there will be a handful of entries from quilting enthusiasts as far off as Casper, Born said.

Attendance at Quilts Along the Platte is free and the public is invited to attend. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. Attendees will be given an optional ballot at the door and asked to vote on their personal favorites.

The event also features vendors exhibiting the latest in quilting tools and accessories. New this year will be one vendor offering scissor and shear sharpening services, for a fee.

Vendors will be offering free demonstrations and classes throughout the three-day event. And Goshen County Quilters will have their boutique open, featuring a variety of hand-crafted quilted items, Born said.

“We ask each of the vendors to do a demonstration of some new product or technique,” she said. “I usually don’t know what those are going to be until right up to the last minute.

“And we have a pretty large boutique of quilts and quilted items for sale. “It’s a chance to do some early Christmas shopping.:
