DOUGLAS – The Wyoming High School Rodeo Association held its final event of the season over the weekend with the Wyoming State Finals in Douglas.
Five locals were able to punch their tickets the National High School Rodeo Finals next month with a strong showing over the three-day event.
The top four competitors in the season-long points standings in each event will qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo which will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska on July 18-24.
Haiden Thompson, Cord Herring, Bodie Herring, Cort McBride and Baliegh Lane qualified in seven events.
Thompson led the way with three events, including reined cow horse, breakaway roping and goat tying. Cord Herring qualified in two events – tie-down roping and team roping, while Bodie Herring qualified in team roping. McBride will join partner Bodie Herring in team roping. Lane qualified for the girl’s cutting event.
Thompson is also the top alternate for nationals in pole bending, while Brenna Herring is the top alternate in breakaway roping.
At the state finals, Thompson won the average in goat tying in 20.94 seconds on three attempts, while Cord Herring won tie-down roping in 37.96 seconds on three.
Lane was also awarded with being the top rookie girl at the state rodeo, while Thompson claimed the Year End All-Around Girl honors.
