Powell, Smith awarded Auxiliary scholarships

TORRINGTON – Delaney Powell and Nichole Smith have been named recipients of the 2017 Community Hospital Auxiliary scholarships.
Powell and Smith, both of Torrington, were selected from a roster of eight applicants to receive the $1,000 scholarship this year, said Angie Neider, chair of the selection committee. The awards are based on a variety of criteria, including educational accomplishment, activities both in and out of school and a 500-word essay written by the applicants.
To qualify for the monetary award, applicants must live in Goshen County and plan to enter a medical field, Ms. Neider said.

“We look at their educational goals in the medical field, what influenced them to chose that course of study, what their hopes are after they complete their education,” she said. “I think we’ve had good results.”
Smith is a “non-traditional” student, Ms. Neider said. She’s currently enrolled in the pre-nursing program at Eastern Wyoming College, with plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center after she receives her associate’s degree at EWC.
“She’s just a real go-getter,” Ms. Neider said. “She did some tutoring, too. You could tell she wasn’t lazy.”
Powell was the 2017 valedictorian at Torrington High School. She plans to attend Eastern Wyoming College, with the eventual goal of a career in dermatology.
“Delaney had very good grades,” Ms. Neider said. “She didn’t do a lot in sports, but there were many other activities she was involved in. Also, she worked as a (certified nursing assistant) at the hospital.”
