TORRINGTON – Students at Torrington High School have begun to receive recognition for a perfect attendance record.
The program started as a way to improve the attendance record of students at THS. Special Education teacher Barb Clark has family that works at a school in Colorado who introduced her to the idea, which Clark shared at a school meeting.
The idea was soon implemented to encourage students to try for a perfect attendance award.
Plendl said they like to get participation from different businesses for the gifts presented to the students. The students that received the award received money but aren’t restricted to any particular place for spending.
“It’s just to do something positive,” Plendl said.
The perfect attendance program is not impacted for students who are gone for school functions but it is by illness.
“I think it’s really good because in the past a lot of students thought there was no reward, or there was just a punishment if you didn’t come, so now that there is like an incentive and there’s a recognition for being here every day, it’s encouraged a lot more of us,” Glass said. “It’s great to have that recognition when you show up everyday and be here when you’re supposed to.
Bustamante said that he is just someone that genuinely likes to attend school and the award is just an added perk of doing something he likes.
