THS musical based on Alcott’s ‘Little Women’

TORRINGTON – This Friday and Saturday, take a step back in time with Torrington High School’s production “Little Women.”
The musical – once featured on Broadway – brings Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel to life, intertwining song and the story of four sisters and their mother making due while the family patriarch fights in the Civil War.
The THS crew began working on the detailed set in February.
“We actually had the set built prior to the Torrington Middle School (TMS) production (earlier this year) and shared it with TMS. Then, after their production, we repainted it all for ‘Little Women’,” set-tech director Chris Quillen said. “We had to have everything mobile – on wheels – due to other events happening on the stage, (including the) TMS musical, choir, band and elementary concerts. Finally, this week, we bolted all the separate mobile walls together so that it is stationary and finished the final touches.

“It has been a fantastic experience working with our set construction/stage/painting crew, which is made up of students and community members. Kris Tolman and I had our drama class students help with painting and publicity as an extension of what they are learning in the classroom. This is my first time in charge of lights (and) sound, and I have been very lucky to have student, Tim Burrill, who has some background in these areas, along with assistance from Aaron Bahmer of Eastern Wyoming College and Kris Tolman.”
As far as the actual production, the musical follows the life of Jo March (Bailey Walker), a passionate woman and aspiring author, as well as her three sisters, Meg (Emi Glass), Amy (Jordan Burton) and Beth
(Mika Brady).
“’Little Women’ is a show I had looked at in the past for our group, so when Erin Jespersen wanted to direct it this year, I was ready to jump on board,” Quillen said.
The play was once touted as “As unexpected as can be!” with music by Jason Howland, including powerful ballads. “Better” and “Here Alone”.
“(‘Little Women’) has fabulous music,” Jespersen said during dress rehearsal last week.
Community members will have two opportunities to view the production on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at THS auditorium. All seats are $5; children and Goshen County students are free.
