SAREC gives producers a glimpse Thursday

LINGLE – The James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle hosted its annual open house last Thursday. The event featured vendors, corn and hail study overviews, research plot tours, poster presentations and cheatgrass challenge wrap-up and results.
The cheatgrass challenge contest began in 2015. Each participating team was assigned a quarter-acre plot at SAREC and an objective to effectively manage the invasive weed.
“First place was Platte County (Natural Resources Conservation Service out of Wheatland),” SAREC administrative associate Kelly Greenwald said. “Peoples’ Choice was (University of Wyoming) SAREC.”

SAREC Director John Tanaka said the main purpose of Thursday’s open house was to offer residents a glimpse at the facility’s research.
“I am excited about our hail study,” he said. “We were able to work with farmers in the area and put it in place really quickly – which I think is great, being able to work with producers.”
The study considers how farmers might best recover from hail loss. In 2016, hail destroyed hundreds of acres of crops south of Lingle.
Other areas explored Thursday include alfalfa’s response to potassium, forage sorghum variety trials, winter wheat variety trials, Blue Tongue Virus transmission, Sunn Hemp and Guar trials and a high tunnel walkthrough.
Greenwald said between 130 and 150 individuals attended the open house.
