TORRINGTON – “We’re still standing because of faithful people who were generous and because the Lord wants this church here,” – Elaine Pugsley, granddaughter of W.O. Eaton, charter member of First Baptist Church in Torrington.
This month, the congregation will celebrate 100 years.
In May of 1918, interested individuals gathered at the “Glad Tidings” Chapel Car to discuss organizing a Baptist church in the area.
“A goodly number came together upon short notice and voted unanimously to organize,” an excerpt from the Goshen County Journal reads. “The Rev. J.F. Blodgett of Casper was here and presided at the meeting. Twenty-six came in as charter members at that meeting and a motion was passed to keep the books open 60 days to receive others who wish to come in. It is expected when the list of charter members is complete, there will be about 40.”
Members met in the Chapel Car, the courthouse, and at other locations until Eaton was able to arrange a loan to purchase the current lot at 2241 Main St.
