Off to a good start

First Torrington Farmers’ Market features variety of products, vendors

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Farmers’ Market kicked off its 2017 season with a bang on Thursday – and board member Caleb Carter only expects the weekly event to grow.
“We were pretty happy with it,” Carter said. “We had a really good showing. A really good, steady flow.”
A total of 10 vendors offered a wide variety of homemade products, including soap, honey, hot sauce, tortillas, baskets, rugs, baked goods, as well as fresh produce including kale, lettuce, radishes, snap peas, green beans
and cabbage.

“I expect more produce vendors later on as gardens come in,” Carter said. “It’s still a little early for tomatoes – it’s probably going to be three or four weeks before we have tomatoes, but maybe sooner.”
Goshen County Economic Development Corporation served free walking tacos at the first market, and the Bee Chilled ice cream truck was also on hand at City Park in Torrington.
“This is really a pretty well-rounded market,” Carter said. “We have a good customer base. We’re pretty excited about it and expect it to pick up as summer progresses.”
In the future, Carter said he expects the market to offer additional vendors, live music, gardening-focused activities for children hosted by Goshen County Master Gardeners and, potentially, educational workshops for adults.
“I’m excited about the start,” Carter said. “And I’m looking forward to seeing (the market) grow throughout
the summer.”
Torrington Farmers’ Markets are held every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at City Park, along West C Street between 21st and 21nd Avenues, in Torrington.
