Town of Lingle offers bill payers another option

LINGLE – The Lingle Town Council passed a motion to begin accepting credit cards during its meeting Wednesday. Residents who choose this option will pay a $7.50 convenience fee.

The town plans to use paygov.us, which requires no equipment, and charges 3 percent per transaction.

“The drawback is, if the internet’s down, we can’t take credit cards,” Clerk-Treasurer Michele Sussex said.

She also stated fees can add up, as she spoke to some towns that pay several thousand dollars in annual credit card fees.

To mitigate these costs, Sussex suggested charging the flat-rate convenience fee.

“If we see that we’re losing some money down the road, we can change that convenience fee,” she said.

Council members inquired about the number of people who request to pay with credit cards.

“It’s a fairly small amount right now, but once the word gets out, I think it will go up,” Sussex said.

The town will begin working to accept credit cards as soon as possible.

In other business:

• The council approved paying bills in the amount of $82,324.51 for the month of October.

Police Chief Endra Moen reported she has predominately been answering phones, doing paperwork and performing VIN inspections following her foot surgery. She will return to full duties as soon as she receives doctor’s approval.

Maintenance Supervisor Larry Haeffelin advised the council his department is preparing for snow.

The town adopted the Region 7 Mitigation Plan via resolution. The resolution ensures the town is eligible for federal funds in the event of an emergency or disaster. Council members Greg Asa and Kelly Greenwald abstained from the vote, saying they didn’t know enough about the plan.

Town hall will be closed Friday for Veterans Day, as well as Nov. 23 and 24 for Thanksgiving.

The next council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. at Lingle
Town Hall.
