Blazers clinch top seed after win

RAWLINS – Four-hundred and fifty-five yards of total offense helped the Torrington Trailblazers pick up a 59-8 win on the road Friday against Rawlins, locking up the top seed in the east for the postseason.

“We’ve probably looked at the bigger picture more than we have in the past,” said coach Mark Lenhardt, who said they addressed securing the No. 1 seed before the Rawlins game. “One of the reasons for that is because we have a mature and smart team.”

The Blazers got the scoring started early, with a three-yard scoring run by Breyden Bivens early in the first quarter. Bryan Lemmon added to the lead with a 10-yard run of his own, giving Torrington a 14-0 advantage still in the first quarter. Torrington scored on special teams as well. Braeden Clausen laid a hit and Lemmon recovered the fumble in the end zone. To avoid the shutout, Rawlins recorded its only touchdown of the night on a 55-yard pass.

Torrington was not done scoring in the first half. Up 21-8, Bivens scored another rushing touchdown, this one from one yard out. Less than two minutes later and Bivens connected with Dylan Waller for a 20-yard touchdown score with 8:49 to go before the intermission.

Nathan Stitt got into the scoring action, finding himself on the receiving end of an 18-yard pass from Bivens, giving the Blazers a 42-8 lead. An interception by Cade Schwartzkopf, his fourth over the past two games, set up Torrington for another touchdown, an 80-yard connection from Bivens to Lemmon, putting the Blazers up 49-8 at the break.

In the second half, Bo Moorehouse took a five-yard scamper to the house with 2:48 to go in the third, giving the Blazers a 55-8 lead. The final score of the night was a 45-yard field goal off the toe of Stitt.

Bivens finished with 225 yards through the air on 14-of-20 passing. He had three passing touchdowns and zero interceptions on the night. Bivens now has 1,298 yards through the air this season, which broke Austin Wisroth’s school record of season passing yards (1,196).

“Breyden has played extremely well over the past two weeks,” Lenhardt said. “He is really peaking at the right time.”

Nine different receivers hauled in a catch Friday. Stitt was Bivens’ favorite target, hauling in four receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown. Lemmon led on receptions in the win for 99 and a touchdown. Waller and Josh Posten combined for four receptions and 59 yards. Lathen Canaday, Jared Lemmon, Ryan Johnson and Cade Schwartzkopf all had one reception apiece.

On the ground, Lemmon finished with 79 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Posten was the second leading rusher with 50 yards on seven carries, while Bivens accounted for 45 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.

The Blazers forced several turnovers on the defensive side of the ball, including the recovered fumble in the end zone. Schwartzkopf, Moorehouse and Jared Lemmon all found interceptions in the win. Torrington has recorded eight interceptions over the past two games.

“They all know what each other is doing,” Lenhardt said of the strong secondary play. “They are seeing the whole picture so they are not trying to go above and beyond.”

The win gives Torrington the No. 1 seed from the east, guaranteeing them home field advantage through the playoffs until the state championship game.

“We’ve got the No. 1 seed, but it’s up to our community to come out and make it a home field advantage,” Lenhardt said. “We need to get out and be loud.”

The Blazers guaranteed to meet Worland in the first round of the playoffs, but they still have to close out the regular season. Torrington, who now has a 6-1 record, hosts Riverton on Friday for Senior Night.

“Every week is a championship week to us,” Lenhardt said. “Come Tuesday when we meet again, the focus is on Riverton. We want to be a champion of this week.”
