Meier advances to State Treasurer

GOSHEN COUNTY – LaGrange native and current District 3 Senator Curt Meier successfully squared off against District 17 Senator Leland Christensen, as well as former candidate Ron Redo in the Wyoming Primary Election State Treasurer race Tuesday.

Locally, Meier received 2,571 votes, or 74.56 percent; Christensen earned 763 votes, or 22.13 percent; and Redo, 113 votes, 3.28 percent.

Statewide rankings mirrored Goshen County results, with Meier collecting 47,591 votes; Christensen, 43,089; and Redo, 4,439.

“We sure do appreciate all the support we had around the state and our volunteers helping to put out signs and letting me know about different functions and things in their community so we could reach out to folks,” Meier said, adding his plans as State Treasurer include balancing the budget, increasing investment returns and supporting education.

Voters hit the polls for Steinmetz in Senate District 3

GOSHEN COUNTY – Current House District 5 State Rep. Cheri Steinmetz edged out fellow contender Martin Gubbels in Goshen, Niobrara and Weston counties for the Republican Senate District 3 seat Tuesday.

Locally, residents showed their support for Steinmetz with 2,498 votes, or 74.61 percent; and Gubbels, with 834 votes, or 24.91 percent. In Niobrara County, Steinmetz received 558 votes to Gubbels’ 336; and Weston County sent 729 votes Steinmetz’s way, compared to 367 for Gubbels.

“Thank you to the citizens in Goshen, Niobrara and Weston Counties for placing your trust in me to serve you in the State Senate,” Steinmetz said Wednesday. “I commend Mr. Gubbels on a well-run, positive campaign.”

Gubbels also thanked voters for their support.

“I just did the best I could,” he said. “Thanks for all the support. My family and I enjoyed it – we learned a lot, and I will certainly support all of the winners in the Republican Party. Congratulations to all the candidates, the winners and the losers.”

Steinmetz will now face Democratic opponent Marci Shaver in the November General Election.

Voters select Dominguez for County Treasurer

GOSHEN COUNTY – Voters cast more ballots for Deputy Treasurer Leticia Dominguez, to the tune of 1,516 votes, or 59.9 percent, over fellow Goshen County Treasurer candidate Roberta Goeken, 1,014 votes, 40.06 percent, in Tuesday’s Primary Election.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me through these past few months, especially my friends and family for their time and effort in helping with the campaign,” Dominguez said. “This win wouldn’t have happened without them. I would also like thank my competitor, Roberta Goeken. Throughout this, we still had to work together and we continued to stay friends – she ran a good a race. I hope to have your continued support for the General Election in November.”

Ellis, Cox dominate commissioner race

GOSHEN COUNTY – Current Goshen County Commissioner John Ellis and newcomer Cody Cox earned nearly 75 percent combined of all votes for the two open commissioner seats in Tuesday’s Primary Election. Ellis received 1,658 votes, or 39.09 percent; while Cox received 1,493 votes, or 35.2 percent.

“I would just like to thank everybody in Goshen County for giving me the opportunity to serve them for the next four years,” Cox said. 

Voters also showed their support for contenders Mike Ridenour, 756 votes, or 17.82 percent, and Mark Le Grande, 323 votes, 7.61 percent.

Ellis could not be reached for comment.

Duncan edges Van Mark for District 5 spot

GOSHEN COUNTY – Political newcomer Shelly Duncan earned the Republican nomination in Tuesday’s Primary Election for House District 5 Representative with 1,104 local votes, or 41.66 percent. Contender Ruth Van Mark received 1,008 votes, or 38.04 percent; and Roseanna Davison collected 497 votes, or 18.75 percent.

“I would like to say ‘Thank you,’ first of all,” Duncan said Wednesday. “I am so overwhelmed by the support and encouragement by everybody. We are taking a breather today, and then will continue (campaigning).”

Duncan will face off against Democratic candidate Joan Brinkley in the November General Election.

In other House news, incumbent John Eklund secured the District 10 Representative seat with 103 votes in Goshen County, or 78.03 percent, and 1,705 votes in Laramie County, over challenger Donn Edmunds’ 28 votes in Goshen County, or 21.21 percent, and 531 votes in Laramie County.

Boyer upsets Brown in attorney election

GOSHEN COUNTY – Challenger Eric R. Boyer, with 1,320 votes, or 53.4 percent, upset incumbent Goshen County Attorney Ken Brown, who received 1,150 votes, or 46.52 percent, in Tuesday’s Primary Election.

“I definitely want to thank all the voters in the county for their support,” Boyer said Wednesday. “I sincerely look forward to working with and for the people of Goshen County for the betterment of the county.”

Residents support Buchanan as Secretary of State

GOSHEN COUNTY – Lingle resident Ed Buchanan will continue on as Secretary of State after running unopposed in Tuesday’s Wyoming Primary Election. He was governor-appointed to finish former Secretary of State Ed Murray’s term in March 2018, after Murray resigned.

Buchanan received 3,310 votes in Goshen County Tuesday, 99.61 percent of the 3,323 total votes. Residents also filled the write-in slot 13 times.

Overall, 87,900 voters across the state punched Buchanan’s name at the polls.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be selected for this office by the Central Committee and Gov. Mead,” Buchanan was quoted in a press release regarding his appointment earlier this year. “I pledge my best efforts to the state of Wyoming and her citizens. I am blessed and honored to serve.”

Hageman wins big locally, loses
gubernatorial bid statewide

GOSHEN COUNTY – Despite receiving 45.68 percent, or 1,651, of Republican votes cast in Tuesday’s Primary Election for governor in Goshen County, Fort Laramie native Harriet M. Hageman earned the third-place slot statewide. With 23,156 votes total, Hageman was bested by overall winner State Treasurer Mark Gordon, with 35,995 votes, and Foster Friess, 28,035 votes.

Locally, Gordon received 859 votes, or 23.77 percent; Friess secured 563 votes, or 15.58 percent; Sam E. Galeotos, 383 votes (13,703 statewide), 10.6 percent; Taylor Haynes, 129 votes (5,841 statewide), 3.57 percent; and Bill Dahlin, 28 votes (1,666 statewide), .77 percent. 

Democratic candidate Mary A. Throne won her party in Goshen County and across the state, with 280 votes, 72.54 percent, and 10,963 votes, respectively. Other Democratic contenders included Michael Allen Green, 49 votes (2,214 statewide), 12.69 percent; Kenneth R. Casner, 27 votes (1,076 statewide), 6.99 percent; and Rex Wilde, 20 votes (1,104 statewide), 5.18 percent.

“Jennie and I are incredibly humbled by the results of tonight’s election,” Gordon said in a statement Tuesday. “From the very beginning, our campaign has been driven by, and for, Wyoming people. Tonight, Wyoming people spoke and loud clear. They saw through the anonymous attacks and out-of-state attempts to influence this race. They spoke up for Wyoming. Jennie and I are honored to have earned the faith and trust of so many Wyoming people. We have been overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from all across Wyoming.”

“We want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the thousands of supporters, volunteers, donors, friends, and family who worked tirelessly to make this victory possible.  Ours was a clean run, the sort of campaign we expect in Wyoming. To you we will be forever grateful.” 

“Tomorrow, we will continue forward with our campaign towards the general election. I’ll keep meeting with Wyoming folks across the state and working for each and every vote. There’s still a big race ahead and I’m taking nothing for granted. Working together, I know we can build an even brighter future for our great state. Thank you.”

Racines loses Goshen County, wins state

GOSHEN COUNTY – Kristi Racines, who serves as current Chief Fiscal Officer for Wyoming’s judicial branch, may have lost out to State Rep. Nathan Winters in Goshen County – 1,418 votes, or 46.14 percent, to 1,649 votes, or 53.66 percent, respectively – but she won the Republican nomination after all state votes were tallied for the Wyoming Primary Election Tuesday.

Racines received 55,522 votes total. Winters, who represents Big Horn, Hot Springs, Fremont and Park counties, earned 36,742.
