TORRINGTON – Marion E. Confer, 92, of Torrington passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, following a brief illness.

Marion was born April 9, 1929, near Red Oak, Iowa to John and Frances Confer. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse before graduating from Red Oak High School. He later received his bachelor’s degree.

Marion helped on his family farm for several years then joined the United States Air Force where he served during the Korean conflict, Vietnam War and Cold War. He was a navigator on bombers and Looking Glass aircraft. Stateside, Marion served on alert crews and as a maintenance supervisor. He earned the rank of Major before retiring. Marion loved this country and was fiercely patriotic.

During a time off from Air Force service, Marion returned to farm in southwest Iowa where he met and wooed Connie Ann Durland. The two were united in marriage in LeGrand, Iowa on Aug. 8, 1958. He returned to active duty, and later they added two daughters to the family.

Following his retirement, he returned to farming near Red Oak before moving to Laramie and then to Torrington where he retired from farming in 1998.

Marion enjoyed family time, his Polled Hereford cattle, John Deere tractors, road trips with family, his beloved dogs and visits and storytelling with friends and family. His faith was also very important to him.

Marion is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother, an infant granddaughter, and many family members and friends. He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Connie, daughters, Becky McFarland and Kathy Shain (Robby Butler); grandson, Tim McFarland, and many close family and friends.

Burial will be in the Emerson Cemetery near Red Oak, Iowa at a later date. An informal Celebration of Life gathering for Marion’s close family and friends will take place on Aug. 8 from 2-4 p.m. at 101 Cottonwood Terrace, Torrington.
