TORRINGTON – Marie Hergert (Phiffer) died peacefully on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at the age of 95.
Wife of farmer, Elmer Hergert, she was a city girl, born March 5, 1922, in Colorado and raised in Chicago, Ill. Marie (13) and Elmer (14) met when Marie traveled with her aunt and uncle to Wyoming visiting relatives. Over the years, they stayed in contact sending letters to each other. After graduation, Elmer accompanied the family’s sheep to Chicago by rail for sale. While there, he looked Marie up, arriving on Valentine’s Day. A week later they were married and returned to Wyoming to begin their life together.
Marie was a loving wife, a wonderful mother to five children, a knitting instructor at the college, an avid gardener, a leader and judge in 4-H, an artist and lastly a quilter.
Preceding Marie in death were her husband, Elmer Hergert, and a great-grandson, Riley Sager. Marie is survived by her five children. Listed oldest to youngest are: Sherry Sager (British Columbia, Canada), Bonnie Roller and husband (Firestone, Colo.), Linda Groskopf and husband (Las Cruces, N.M.), Cathy McLees (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Mark Hergert (Lead, S.D.). Marie is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-
grandchildren.
An informal celebration of Marie’s life will be held at the Golden Homes Center from 2 – 4 p.m.on Friday, Dec. 29. Cremation arrangements were made by Colyer Funeral Home. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please give to your favorite charity.
