CHADRON, Neb. – Caitlyn Cummings and Craig Leighead, both of Torrington, were among seniors honored Friday during annual Ivy Day ceremonies at Chadron State College here.
Cummings graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in psychological sciences and Leithead received his degree in business education during spring commencement exercises on Saturday in Chadron.
The annual Ivy Day ceremonies date back almost a century, to May 1919. The first Ivy Day at the then-Chadron Normal School featured the crowning of the May Queen, dance performances and the planting of ivy by three senior boys. The tradition was patterned after similar ceremonies at schools – particularly women’s colleges – around the country, dating back further to traditional spring observances in northern Europe.
The local chapters of the Blue Key and Cardinal Key honor societies sponsor Ivy Day at Chadron State College. The tradition still includes crowning of Ivy Day royalty and the presentation of the Platinum Eagle awards for distinguished leadership and service.
