Local youth successful at Showcase Showdown

LARAMIE, Wyo. – With their first-place finish at the 2019 Showcase Showdown, this year’s champion senior horse judging team – consisting of Kylie Carson, Cora Frederick, Kendall Haas, and Dally Wilkins – are now two-time Showcase Showdown champions in hippology, defending their title from 2018. Differing from horse judging where members judge performance and halter classes, hippology is the study of all things equine: anatomy, feeds, tack, medications, and more.

On the day of the contest, members judged six classes (four performance and two halter classes) and defended their placings with four sets of oral reasons. This group of equine experts clenched the high senior team overall title with a lead of 17 points over rivaling Converse County and the help of several stellar individual scores.

Haas led the team with a consistent performance, placing as the second-place high individual overall at the contest. Not far behind, were Frederick and Carson, tying for third place with just one point below Haas’s overall score. Wilkins also contributed to the team’s success with her sixth place overall finish. These members will have the opportunity to represent not only Goshen County but the state of Wyoming as well at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio this October.

The second team of senior horse judgers that Goshen County brought to the state competition consisted of members Kealy Carson, Rori Masterson, and Jesse Lynn Garson. This team placed remarkably well, as they earned the title of fifth high overall team, with only three members.

Junior horse judging team members Jami Garson, Kailey Porter, Kenzie Wilkins, and Addisyn Wilkins had every right to celebrate as well, as they finished as the third high team overall and fifth high in hippology. These outstanding groups of horse judgers were accompanied at the contest by their coach and 4-H volunteer Mercedes Powers-Glenn.

Horse judging, however, was not the only team that helped Goshen County steal the spotlight during this year’s Showcase Showdown, as the produce judgers’ spot-on evaluations of eight classes – including the questions pertaining to them – earned these junior members high status, as well. Team members Benjamin Carter, Brett Gara, Ayden Shimic, and Beaux Shimic made up the champion junior produce judging team. Ben took a commanding hold of his spot as the champion intermediate individual by earning first in placings and second in ID line. Not far behind in points was Ayden, earning fourth high intermediate individual, and Beaux, who was the top high individual in the junior division. Fawn Griebe and Lane Carter judged as junior individuals for the first time and did remarkably well, finishing seventh and ninth overall, respectively. Our lone senior contestant Lucas Gara placed as the second high individual at this event by earning second in placings and third in ID line.

Judging is not all Goshen County had to offer during the 2019 Showcase Showdown, as members in the robotic contest had a successful showing, too. Several Goshen County 4-H members put their programming and engineering skills to the test, having their robots compete in duels, and the results from the sumo contest are as follows:

3rd place intermediate sumo team: Brett Gara, Ben Carter, and Ayden Shimic

2nd place senior Sumo team: Lucas Gara and William Baker

Robotics contestants were challenged to program their robots on the spot in order to complete a required set of “missions” in 30 minutes or less. Goshen County’s 4-H members rose to the occasion, earning them several titles:

• 1st place junior mission challenge team: Connor Coxbill, Trevor Jolovich, and Beaux Shimic

• 2nd place junior mission challenge individual: Hadley Evans

• 1st place intermediate mission challenge team: Brett Gara, Ben Carter, Ayden Shimic

• 2nd place intermediate mission challenge team: Anden Hansen, Austin Gerharter, and Bryan Lowther

• 3rd place intermediate mission challenge team: Samuel Baker and Jackson Baker

• 1st place senior mission challenge team: Lucas Gara and William Baker

The Robotics Construction competition allowed participants the opportunity to design a robot for a specific agricultural-related task. Goshen County swept to the top five team places in the intermediate age division, with:

• Talon Tippetts, Lane Carter, and Devon Bauman placing 5th;

• Brett Gara, Ben Carter, and Ayden Shimic placing 4th;

• Tilly Fogle, Emmett Coxbill, and Kannon Tippetts placing 3rd;

• Anden Hansen, Austin Gerharter, and Bryan Lowther placing 2nd and, Samuel Baker and Jackson Baker placing 1st.

More placings from the Robotic Construction contest are as follows:

• 1st place junior individual: Hadley Evans

• 3rd place junior team: Connor Coxbill, Trevor Jolovich, and Beaux Shimic

• 1st place senior team: Lucas Gara and William Baker

Another event offered at Showcase Showdown was cake decorating, with Tilly Fogle showcasing her creative abilities at the state contest by decorating a themed cake, which awarded her as the fourth-place intermediate individual cake decorator.

Carly Keller placed fifth in the senior table setting competition, just eight points behind the top individual, demonstrating just how competitive the event was at the state contest. Participants in the table setting competition were tasked with designing a theme for their table and quizzed with knowledge of various table appointments.

Table Setting, however, was not the only event to keep Keller busy during this year’s Showcase Showdown. As a state 4-H Fabric & Fashion project ambassador, Keller led a sewing workshop and modeling opportunity while in Laramie, as well. Destiny Beaman and Kylie Carson, as members of the State 4-H Leadership Team, also helped run the various events over the course of the three days.

Rounding out our list of results from Showcase Showdown is Bridgette Lowther, who was the seventh-place senior individual in the prepared presentation contest.
