TORRINGTON – After winning the first round games of the city tournament, the Cubs and Yankees are set to square off in the championship game tonight (Wednesday) at 7:15 p.m.
The Cubs pulled off the upset Monday night, getting the win over the No. 1 seed Cardinals. The Cubs got the scoring going, with Mac Hibben, Caleb Kelly and Matthew Keene all coming around to score in the third. Both teams plated two runs in the fourth, putting the score at 5-2 going into the fifth.
In the fifth inning, it was all the Cubs, adding another three runs to their lead. Ryder Hackbarth, Colter McFarlin and Keene all scored in the fifth to seal the win for the Cubs, 8-2. Keene paced the Cubs in scoring, with three runs, while Ryan Moorehouse added another. Grady Shields and Kealy Carson scored the two runs for the Cardinals.
On the other diamond Monday, the Yankees outpaced the Mets, 8-1. Mateo Correa got the scoring started with a run in the second inning. Ayden Desmond and Ben Firminhac continued the scoring, racking up a run apiece in the third. Keyan Sargent scored in the fourth for the Mets, but the Yanks came back in the same inning to score three, with Barrett Eichenberger, Desmond and Firminhac all scoring. In the sixth, Eichenberger and Firminhac came around to score again, upping the Yankee lead to 8-1.

The Cardinals locked up the top seed with a win Thursday over the Cubs, 9-7. The Cards jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after the first frame, but the Cubs scored back-to-back-to-back runs in the third to take control, 4-2. The Cardinals really took control at the plate during the fourth inning, scoring seven runs. The Cubs tried to rally, scoring one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but it wasn’t enough.
Grady Shields led the Cardinals in runs, scoring two in the win. Kealy Carson joined Shields as the only Cards to score in the first inning. Shields, Nolan Long, Carson Schultz, Brady Cook, Logan Sandusky, Bransen Bumhuardner and Kia Fody all scored in the fourth. Hackbarth scored two runs for the Cubs, including a solo shot in the sixth inning.
In the game that decided the second and third seeds for the city tournament, the Yankees clung on for a 12-11 win over the Mets. After the first frame, the game was tied at four, before the Yanks plated three runs in the second to take a 7-4 lead. Over the next two innings, the Mets outscored the Yankees 3-1, trimming the lead to 9-7.
The Yankees scored another run in fifth and two more in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Mets were attempting a comeback. Tyler Nicolay, Austin Short, Dawson McFadden and Keyan Sargent all came round to score, but the rally fell one run short.
For the Yankees, Ty Bennick, Ben Firminhac, Justin Clayton and Race Schwartzkopf all scored two runs, with Mateo Correa, Ayden Desmond, Remington Mathson and Nathanial Stull each adding one. Nicolay and Short paced the Mets in runs, with three apiece, while McFadden and Sargent each added two. Braeden Reid accounted for the other run for the Mets.
The championship game between the Cubs and Yankees is slated for 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Complex. The Cards and Mets meet in the third-place game at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
