Little Britches Rodeo overpowers weather

TORRINGTON – Despite the snow in Torrington and surrounding areas, the Torrington Elk’s Little Britches Rodeo went off smoothly this past weekend, with all of the belt buckles being distributed to the winners.

“It went quite well with the exception of the weather,” rodeo chairman Bob Schaefer said. “The inside facility at the fairgrounds is very beneficial this time of the year.”

Eight families withdrew from the two-day rodeo because of the weather, but the event was still well attended. Six states were represented at the Goshen County Fairgrounds, with competitors from Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota, Montana and New Mexico all vying for points in the Little Britches Rodeo series.

When it came to action on the dirt, Schaefer, who has been rodeo chairman for nine years, said the competition was fierce.

“The two performances went quite well,” he said. “We were very fortunate that we had winners in every event. We had qualifying rides in every rough stock event, so that helped us award all of our buckles.

“The competition was hot,” Schaefer added. “These kids don’t do this once or twice, they do this a couple times a month.”

In addition to the six states represented, locals had a stake in the weekend rodeo as well.

“We had a couple locals place really well,” Schaefer said. “For our local people, we get a lot of support spectator wise.”

The youth competitors were vying for points during each rodeo to better their standings in the National Little Britches Rodeo Association. The NLBRA national finals is on July 10-15 in Guthrie, Okla.
