Little Britches Rodeo goes off without a hitch

TORRINGTON – Other than the weather, the Torrington Elk’s Little Britches Rodeo went smoothly on Saturday and Sunday at the Goshen County Fairgrounds.
“With the inclement weather conditions we had, it went well,” Robert Schaefer, the rodeo chairman, said. “I didn’t hear any complaints except about the weather.”
The Little Britches Rodeo brought in 138 youth rodeoers from across eight states. Wyoming (58 participants), South Dakota (50), Nebraska (14), Colorado (11), Montana (3), Utah (2), Texas (1) and New Mexico (1) were all represented at the pavilion in Torrington. Despite the draw from the other states, Goshen County was well represented, with 20 participants from

the county.
“We had a couple all-around winners that came from Goshen County,” Schaefer said. “That was really nice to see.”
Schaefer noted that the competition level at the rodeo was high this past weekend, like it is at Little Britches Rodeos across the country.
“It’s very competitive. These kids are serious,” Schaefer said. “Coming ready to play is just an expression. These kids come prepared and show up with their game faces on.”
The Torrington Little Britches Rodeo was one of a series of more than 400 rodeos throughout the country that leads to the National Finals Rodeo, July 4 – 9, in Guthrie, Okla. The Little Britches Rodeo season started at the end of July last year and runs to the beginning of this summer.
Competitors must place in the top seven finishers at four separate Little Britches Rodeo events to qualify for the finals. More than 1,000 young people competed at the National Finals in 2016. This year, officials are anticipating 1,100 to 1,200 competitors for the National Finals events.
