BURNS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie boys started their season with a win over Shoshoni at the Burns Winter Classic over the weekend, before falling against Little Snake River and Saratoga.

“The first night against Shoshoni, we played fairly well and fairly disciplined,” coach Steve Zimmerman said. “The next day, we played two pretty good teams and we were a little shell shocked. We couldn’t move the ball very well.”

Mason McFadden was the star of the show for the Doggers in their win to open the season. He finished the game with a double-double, racking up 20 points and 18 rebounds. He shot 9-for-17 from the floor and recorded six offensive rebounds, along with a block.

“Mason exceeded our expectations. The way he rebounded was the first thing I was pleased with,” Zimmerman said. “He was almost unstoppable all tournament. It’s exciting. You know you have one area that is really positive.”

Ty Mueller stepped in to aid in the scoring department, chipping in nine points of 4-of-6 shooting. He also had five rebounds and a team-high six assists, along with two steals and a block. Hayden Hill chipped in six points, three boards an assist and two steals.

Caeden Riley filled his stat line with three points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Bailey Powell, Scott Gilchriest and Dagan Davis all had two points apiece, while combining for two rebounds and an assist.

In the win, the Doggers shot 50 percent from the floor, but only 50 percent from the charity stripe.

The Doggers came out slow in their first game Saturday in Burns, falling behind 20-4 after the first quarter. Second-ranked Little Snake River poured on another 15 points in the second frame, compared to L-FL’s eight points. At the end of the third, the Doggers found themselves down 57-14. L-FL put up seven points in the fourth quarter, which had a running clock, while limiting the Rattlers to four.

McFadden shot 50 percent from the field on 5-of-10 shooting, accounting for 10 points for the Doggers. He also tied for the team lead in rebounds, with four, along with two blocks. Mueller was second in scoring with four points on 2-of-4 shooting, which he paired with a rebound, two assists and a team-high three blocks.

Gilchriest, Riley and Cordell Forkner combined for seven points in the loss. All three of Gilchriest’s points came at the free-throw line. The trio also combined for six rebounds and a steal. Powell and Rhett Greenwald tallied five rebounds.

The Doggers’ shooting percentage dropped to 36 percent in their second game of the season.

Saratoga 71, L-FL 38

L-FL picked up its shooting percentage from behind the arc, knocking down 4-of-12 from deep for its first three-pointers of the season. Despite the three-pointers, the Doggers fell in their final game of the weekend.

Mueller knocked down two of the three-pointers, finishing the game with 10 points. He also had four boards, two assists, two steals and a team-high two blocks. McFadden recorded another double-double, racking up 12 points and 10 rebounds, along with a block.

Riley turned in six points, including a three-pointer, along with a rebound and a team-high three steals. Cooper Hill chipped in five points, three from deep and two from the charity stripe. Powell and Forkner combined for five points of their own.

Greenwald and Hayden Hill tallied seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

The Doggers sit at 1-2 at the end of the weekend to start the young season. The Doggers are slated to host the L-FL Invitational this weekend in Lingle, playing Hulett on Friday at 4:30 p.m. L-FL has two games Saturday against Midwest at 10:30 a.m. and Encampment at 4:30 p.m.

“I think we will see three teams that play a lot of zone defense,” Zimmerman said. “Offensively, we have to get some scoring from places other than the low block. The defensive transition and slides is the focus on defense.”
