TORRINGTON – The smell of rubber fills the air as wheels spin on the pavement and classic cars take off for another run.
It’s time for the 44th annual Scottsbluff Valley Street Rods Rod Run, kicking off in downtown Torrington at 9 a.m. Saturday.
But it’s not just classic cars on Main Street. From candy apple red to metallic mint green, with baby blue Chevys and pink Cadillacs, the full day includes the 28th annual Cow Chip Nationals and the 18th annual Classic Cars in the Park at Pioneer Park, starting about 12 p.m.
The Scottsbluff Valley Street Rods started in 1973, hosting events, showing off finely-tuned cars at sometimes 10 to 15 shows per year. Soon, one person from Torrington joined, with membership increasing until about 1990, when the majority of the members were from Goshen County.
Soon, the annual Rod Run and Classic Car Show moved to Torrington, with classic car owners and fans coming from Colorado, Nebraska and across the Cowboy State.
In addition to the Cow Chip Nationals and Classic Cars in the Park, the day features adult and children’s games, including a bean-bag toss, toilet paper toss and push-rod drop. There will also be a Poker Run and food in the park.
