Life is not a linear thing

Hello Torrington. My name is Holly Dorman and I’m the newest reporter at the Torrington Telegram.

A little about me, I grew up in Orlando until 2008 when my family moved to Idaho. I danced with my high school’s team, and we won the state dance competition every year together. As much as I loved dance, it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I could never decide what I wanted to do for a career when I was in high school. However, the summer after high school I saw a documentary about the importance of protecting the freedom of the press in America. I was hooked. From that time on, I knew I wanted to be a reporter.

The reporters in the documentary were so cool and I wanted to be just like them. They dug deep into stories and changed lives by making the truth known. One of the reporters in the documentary was offered enough money to cover his daughter’s costly medical bills if only he would retract a statement he had made in one of his articles. He knew what he had said in that article was true and he stood by it, turning down the money and trusting he would find another way to pay the bills. Since then, I’ve become obsessed with the stories great journalists have written and the behind-the-scenes scoop on how they were written.

I was ready to dive right in and get going on my journalism degree, but life had other plans. Life lined up just right for me to serve a church service mission and I ended up spending the next 18 months in Denmark learning the language and loving the people there. I learned to love soccer and that I have a talent for learning new languages. It was one of the best times of my life.

After coming home, I went straight to school to study journalism. Life interfered again after two semesters when I came down with pneumonia and was stuck in bed for a month. On top of that, the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily shut down the school. I ended up working at a restaurant in Idaho as a manager for a year until I came here to Torrington. Needless to say, life hasn’t turned out the way I thought it would so far. Despite the twists and turns, I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

I love history, fun facts and rock music. I’m always up for a challenge and I can’t wait to get to know the community here in Torrington. If you have a story idea or just want to say hi, please share with me. You can reach me at hdorman@torringtontelegram.com or give us a call at 307-532-2184 and ask for Holly.
