GOSHEN COUNTY – The Lingle-Fort Laramie and Southeast high school volleyball teams picked up wins over the last week, while the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers lost to Western Nebraska Community College in the home opener.

Lady Lancers fall to Western Nebraska in home opener

GOSHEN COUNTY – The Lingle-Fort Laramie and Southeast high school volleyball teams picked up wins over the last week, while the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers lost to Western Nebraska Community College in the home opener.

The Lady Doggers improved to 2-0 in 2A Southeast Quadrant play with a 3-2 win over Pine Bluffs last Thursday.

Lingle won the first two sets 25-12 and 25-17, but in the third set, the Lady Hornets prevented the sweep with a 25-20 win. Pine Bluffs kept their hopes alive, winning the fourth set 25-17.

In the deciding fifth set, the Lady Doggers edged the home team 15-13.

Junior Natalie Speckner led the team with 12 kills and four aces, while sophomore Brenly Shipp and junior Leah Foster had seven kills. Foster also led the team with 18 assists. Shipp and senior Kamryn Rafferty had two blocks each.

The Lady Doggers (3-3) travel to the Big Horn Invite on Friday and Saturday. They will be in a pool with Big Horn, Upton and Big Piney. Action begins at 10 a.m. Friday against the Big Piney Punchers.

Lady Cyclones sweep Guernsey

Fresh off a win over the defending state champions, the Southeast Lady Cyclones made the short drive west to Guernsey, sweeping the Lady Vikings 25-11, 25-9, 25-10 on Tuesday evening.

A pair of aces from senior Sydney Anderson helped push the Southeast lead to 4-0 in the first set. 

The Lady Cyclone lead reached double digits at 13-3 following a kill from senior Shelby Ekwall.

In the second set, Guernsey tied the set at one apiece, and it proved to be as close as the Lady Vikings came to seeing the lead all evening.

Southeast scored the next five point, and one point in the set, senior Brenna Herring served up four aces over the span of six points as the visitors pushed the lead to 17-2.

In the final set of the night, the Lady Cyclones raced out to a 12-2 advantage, cruising to the sweep.

Senior Kealy Carson led Southeast with 10 kills, while Ekwall, Anderson and Herring had four each. Southeast served up 14 aces with five of them coming from Herring, while Anderson added four. Junior Kylee Llewellyn, Herring and sophomore Brooklyn Leithead had one block each.

Southeast (4-4) has a break in the schedule before resuming play on Saturday, Sept. 17. They travel to Rock River for an 11 a.m. contest and to Hanna-Elk Mountain for a 2:30 p.m. match.

Lady Lancers still

searching for first win

The Eastern Wyoming College volleyball team opened the home portion of the schedule with its 10th loss in a row to start the season.

The Lady Lancers were swept at the hands of Western Nebraska Community College 25-7, 25-14, 25-10 on Wednesday evening.

The visiting Lady Cougars scored the first 11 points of the match and limited EWC to only 31 points over the three sets.

In the second set, the Lady Lancers had the match tied on two occasions. Freshman middle blocker Hannah Pharr tied the match at two with a kill. The match was also tied at six before Western Nebraska scored four of the next five points to pull away for the win.

In the third set, freshman outside hitter Ana Djurovic’s kill drew EWC within one at 5-4, but the Lady Cougars went on a 10-0 run pull away for the sweep.

EWC is back in action at home on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. against Northeastern Junior College as part of the annual Wyo-Braska Shootout which runs Sept. 15-17. The Lady Lancers will also play Colorado Northwestern Community College at 11 a.m. and Dodge City (Kansas) Community College at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16. They will wrap up play on Saturday against Lake Region (North Dakota) State College at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
