SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers boys’ and girls’ track teams racked up 34 top-six places at the Binfield Invite in Scottsbluff on Friday.
“I felt this was a very strong start to the 2017 campaign,” coach Mike Lashley said. “I though our seasoned veterans performed extremely well. The coaching staff was also very impressed with the competitive attitude shown by our inexperienced athletes.”
Four Doggers picked up individual first-place finishes, including two from Georgia Wollert. Landen Fuller, Cole Shepardson, Justice Madayag and two relay teams all stood atop the podium.
Wollert proved to be a dominant force on the track and in the field events. She won the 100-meter hurdle prelims and shaved off more time to take the finals crown with a time of 17.2 seconds, which was a season record for her. The senior also set a season best in the 300-meter hurdles, taking first with a time of 51.84. In the high jump, Wollert cleared 5 feet to take second.
Makenna Greenwald placed in three events in Scottsbluff. In the triple jump, she put in a 31 feet, 8 inch effort, placing her second. She also took second in the 300-meter hurdles behind Wollert, clocking 55 seconds. In the pole vault, Greenwald finished sixth, clearing 7 feet.
In other field events, Kaylynn Jefferson took second in the long jump (14 feet, 7.25 inches) and sixth in the triple jump (29 feet, 3 inches). Kalli Nichol and Jade Cooper both competed in the long jump and triple jump but did not place in the top-six. Shelby Heilbrun took ninth in the high jump.
Freshman Savannah Mirich proved herself in the throwing events. She took third in discus with a throw of 86 feet, 3 inches and sixth in the shot put with a 28 feet, 11 inch effort. Rhylea Horejs took 13th in shot and 15th in disc. Shelly Ann Sorrick finished 17th in the discus and 23rd in the shot put.

Back on the track, Kaylan Maez took sixth in the prelims and finals of the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 19.40 seconds in the finals for a season-best. Cora Fredrick and Makenna Steely finished back-to-back in the 1,600-meter run, taking fifth and sixth. Fredrick and Steely both posted personal bests. Jenny Manus took eighth in the 400-meter dash.
LFL’s three relay teams picked up three top-three finishes. The team of Greenwald, Jefferson, Heilbrun and Wollert took first in the 4x400-meter relay, turning in a 4:32.40 effort. Maez, Manus, Heilbrun and Cooper took third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 1:01.29. Steely and Fredrick joined Manus and Heilbrun for the 4x800-meter relay, finishing in 12:25.10 to take third.
“This was the first high school track meet for about half of our team and it was encouraging to see them compete against athletes from much larger schools,” Lashley said. “It is obvious that these kids will not back down from a challenge.”
On the boys’ side, Madayag placed in three field events. He took first in the triple jump, launching 40 feet, 2.5 inches. In the high jump, Madayag cleared 5 feet, 6 inches to take fourth. He also finished fourth in the long jump with a 19 feet, 2.5 inch effort.
On the track, Fuller finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.09, a personal record. He also took third in the 200-meter dash prelims, clocking 23.53 seconds. Shepardson was the final Dogger to pick up an individual title, completing the 300-meter hurdles in 44.11 seconds.
Ty Mueller had a good showing, taking third in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.50 seconds. He finished second in the long jump (20 feet, 2 inches) and fourth in the triple jump (38 feet, 8 inches).
Taylor Wagner and Rhett Greenwald both competed in the pole vault. Wagner cleared 10 feet, 6 inches, taking eighth, and Greenwald cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to finish 10th.
LFL had five boys compete in each of the two throwing events. Tyler Hunt launched the shot 44 feet, 3 inches to take sixth. Dagen Davis was the best finisher in discus, clearing 101 feet. Elias Dodson, Rayden Alonzo and Gage Correa all competed in shot and disc.
In the mile, Kelly Peterson finished second, clocking 5:08.80 and Scott Gilchriest finished eighth. Christian Burton took ninth in the two-mile with a time of 12:24.99.
Gaven Niles picked up the bronze in the 400-meter dash with a 57.37 second effort. Wagner took seventh in the 800-meter run and Zane Rising finished 17th. Clay Colton competed in the 100 and 200-meter dash but was unable to make it to the finals.
Like the girls, the three boys’ relay teams amassed three top-three finishes. Shepardson, Mueller, Wagner and Fuller combined to finish the 4x400-meter relay in 3:39.66 to take first. Shepardson, Greenwald, Colton and Niles took third in the 4x100-meter relay and Jackson Gregory, Gilchiest, Peterson and Niles took third in the 4x800.
“Right now, it is like a 1,000-piece puzzle,” Lashley said. “We have about half of the puzzle put together, but now we must figure out where the other pieces fit. This process will be vital if we intend to challenge for championships at the end of the season.”
