LINGLE – Freshman Brody Roberts gave the Lingle-Fort Laramie boys’ basketball team an early 2-0 lead.

It proved to be the only time the Doggers found themselves in front of the Niobrara County in a 58-32 loss to the Tigers.

The loss came a day after LFL led most of the game, only to come up short in a 42-39 loss to the Southeast Cyclones.

With Lingle leading 2-0, NCHS scored the next eight points, but sophomore Nolan Spears’ 3-pointer drew the Doggers within two heading into the second quarter, but that’s when the home team’s offense went cold.

“Realistically, you look at it, that was a team who got right up in our grills physically, push and shove,” LFL coach Steve Zimmerman said. “We are just not physically stature enough to handle that.”

Spanning from the 2:50 mark in the second quarter to the 2:13 mark in the third quarter, Lingle scored no points.

Roberts bucket in the second was the start of the scoreless stretch, but he also ended the dry spell.

“You can’t go the second half and not score a field goal,” Zimmerman said. “Offensively, we are still struggling, at times, to get through our complete offense.”

However, by that time, the Tiger lead had ballooned to 36-15. The score also marked the only points in the third for the Doggers.

The pace of the game quickened in the as the teams combined for 34 points, but NCHS still outscored Lingle over the final eight minutes, 19-15.

Roberts and sophomore Aidan Mattheus led the team in scoring with seven points each, while Mattheus and Spears grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

The Doggers (3-8) travel to Guernsey (4-3) for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Friday.

“We’ve now seen everyone in our quadrant, and we are as good as any of them,” Zimmerman said. “It’s just on a night, if we make shots, we will be right there.”
