TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers opened the season 2-0 after defeating North Platte Community College (NPCC) on Friday night and McCook Community College (MCC) on Saturday.
EWC dominated NPCC on Friday in an 88-64 blowout. Saturday’s game against MCC was much closer, as the Lancers won 76-70.
Things were never close Friday night as the Lancers stormed out to a quick lead against NPCC and never looked back. EWC led at the half by a score of 48-26.
Things were much of the same in the second half as NPCC never poised a real threat to the Lancers. EWC outscored NPCC 40-38 in the second half.
The Lancers had four players in double figures on Friday night, led by freshman guard Terrance Jones with a game high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting including 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Freshman guard/forward Herman Melashych came off the bench and scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Freshman guard/forward Nikolas Gustavson scored 13 points and secured eight rebounds. Freshman guard Sofyane Nocara chipped in 11 points shooting 4-of-9 from the field.
NPCC freshman guard German Plotnikov led the way for the Knights with 17 points shooting 3-of-15 from the field but did make 11-of-16 free throw attempts.
The win over MCC was a tough battle throughout. The Lancers held a slim 35-32 lead at the half.
EWC will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30, hosting College of Southern Idaho. Tipoff is scheduled at 2 p.m.
