NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – The Eastern Wyoming College men’s basketball team began the 2021-22 season with a pair of losses.
On Friday, the Lancers couldn’t overcome an 49-41 halftime deficit in a 79-75 loss to the McCook Indians.
EWC shot only 41.2% (28-for-68) while allowing McCook to shoot 50% (32-for-64).
The Lancers had four players in double-figures, led by freshman Tom Mark with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Mark also had three shot blocks. Sophomore Enzo Clouvel Urie added 15 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the 3-point line, while sophomore Nikolas Gustavson had 13 points. Sophomore Herman Melashych had 10 points off the bench.
The next day, Eastern Wyoming grabbed an early five-point lead against the North Platte Knights, but the home team outscored the Lancers 48-36 in the second half in an 85-72 loss.
The Knights quickly erased the EWC lead, cutting it to one, but it wasn’t until the final eight minutes of the first half when North Platte took its first lead.
The Knights’ lead reached as many as 19 in the second half following a 14-0 run.
Mark led EWC with 14 points, while Urie added 13. Sophomore Kayden Toldson added 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Lancers (0-2) are back in action at the Bruin Classic hosted by Salt Lake Community College. The Lancers face SLCC at 7 p.m. Friday and Real Salt Lake Prep at 1 p.m. Saturday.
