TORRINGTON – Following a ruling from the National Junior College Athletic Association, the Eastern Wyoming College golf team has been crowed as the 2019-20 Region IX champions.

“It was great to hear the news that we could use the fall standings to award team and individual awards,” EWC coach Zack Smith said. “Everyone in the region works so hard all year long, and everyone was disappointed that we could not play this spring, so this is some good news that we could all use right now.”

The Lancers secured the top four spots of the first team All-Region team.

Jovin Tan (sophomore, Taiping, Malaysia) won the individual regional title, with Tomas Kubata (freshman, Prague, Czech Republic) finishing second. Mason Hale (sophomore, Atkinson, Neb.) was third, and Lucas Howell (freshman, Colorado Springs, Colo.) was fourth.
RJ Moya (sophomore, Three Rivers, Texas) earned second team All-Region honors finishing tied for sixth.

“It is hard right now when Thursdays and Fridays roll around as we should be playing in tournaments, but I am happy that the entire team is safe during this global pandemic,” Smith said. “I am so proud of the team and what they were able to accomplish this year. I’m excited for the players that are transferring on, the players that are returning and for the new recruits coming in next year. Lancer golf will be back and ready to roll this fall.”

The Lancers conclude the season with five team wins, to go along with second and a sixth-place finishes.

Despite the regional title, EWC will not attend the NJCAA National Division 1 Men’s Golf Championship, which it has been canceled because of the national COVID-19 crisis.
