Lancer golf qualifies for nationals, captures reserve champion title

RIVERTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Lancer golf team completed the spring season with a final tournament hosted by Central Wyoming College in Riverton.

The Lancers finished the tournament in second place with a total score of 607. McCook Community College was first with 606.

This is the fourth straight qualification to nationals for the Lancers as they finished the season as Region IX Reserve Champions.

Regional placings for individuals were as follows: Trey Massey, sophomore, Lander - 69 points, tied first; Gonzalo Arcelay Fernandez-Meras, freshman, Munguia, Spain - 58 points, third; George Elliott, freshman, Salisbury, United Kingdom - 51 points, fifth; Kash Kaufman, freshman, Torrington - 39 points, seventh; Malosi Togisala, freshman, Ogden, Utah - 35 points, eighth; Jared Pilkington, sophomore, Scottsbluff, NE - 22 points, tied 14th.

Individual placings for the final tournament in Riverton were as follows: Massey, 75, 70 - 145, first; Togisala, 75, 72 - 147, tied second; Arcelay Fernandez-Meras, 75, 75 - 150, tied fourth; Elliott, 80, 75 - 155, tied seventh; Pilkington, 77, 81 - 158, tied ninth.

"It was tough to come up one stroke short of our third Region IX Championship in a row, but I'm proud of the way the guys played all year," coach Zach Smith said. "I'm lucky to have the opportunity to work with such a great group of athletes. We are eager to travel to Lubbock in a little over a week to compete at nationals."

The Lancers will travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the national tournament May 15-18.
