Lady Lancers split weekend in Powell

POWELL – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers hit the road for Northwest College over the weekend, picking up a win Friday over Central Wyoming College before losing to the host Northwest on Saturday.

EWC 81, CWC 66

In the win over CWC, the Lady Lancers held only a one-point lead after the first frame, 22-21, before exploding for 32 points in the second quarter, compared to the Lady Rustlers’ 14 points. Coming out of the break, EWC added another 20 points to CWC’s 10. In the fourth, the Lady Lancer offense was limited to seven points, to CWC’s 21 points was not enough to make up the difference, with the Lady Lancers picking up the 81-66 win.

Lauren O’Connell led the way in scoring for EWC, raking up 21 points. She made it rain from the floor, shooting 8-of-12, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. She rounded out her stat line with three rebounds and an assist.

Nicole Cutler turned in 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. She also accounted for four rebounds and an assist. Abril Rexach Roure led the Lady Lancers in assists (five) and tied for the team-lead in steals (three), while racking up 11 points, seven of which came from the free-throw line. Cathlyn Knutson was the final Lady Lancer in double-figures, pouring in 10 points from the bench. She also had a rebound, two assists and two steals.

Pamela Bethel was a monster on the boards, hauling in 16 rebounds, four on offense. She also had a steal and five points. Macie Mackey rounded out the starters with five points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals.

From the bench, Ines Salat Margarit tied for the team lead with three steals, while also accounting for two rebounds, four assists and four points. Morning Gambler had seven points on the night, while Emily Buchanan and Kelliann Raff each turned in three points. Gambler, Buchanan, Raff, Kaylynn Jefferson and Ijeoma Ezikeolisa combined for nine rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Northwest 80, EWC 72

The second and third quarters proved to be the difference between the Lady Lancers and Lady Trappers. The teams were tied at 21 after the first quarter and Northwest went on to triple EWC in the second quarter, 18-6. The Lady Trappers edged EWC in the third quarter, 24-22. The Lady Lancers outscored Northwest by six points in the fourth quarter, 23-17, before falling 80-72.

Bethel had a stellar game in the loss, finishing with a double-double. She shot 10-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. At the charity stripe, Bethel added 10 points to her total, finishing with 33 on the night. She also racked up seven offensive and 13 defensive rebounds. Her stat line was rounded out with two steals.

Roure was the final Lady Lancer in double-figures, tallying 13 points on the night. She was second on the team in boards, with three, while leading the way in assists, with five, and steals, with four. O’Connell turned in six points and two rebounds. Cutler and Mackey rounded out the starters, combining for three points, three boards and an assist.

Knutson had the biggest contribution from the bench, turning in nine points, a rebound and an assist. Buchanan and Margarit had four points apiece. Margarit finished added a rebound, an assist and a steal to her performance, while Buchanan accounted for three steals.

The Lady Lancers currently sit at 2-3 on the young season after their weekend of action in Powell. They return to action in a tournament over the weekend hosted by Miles City College in Miles City, Mont. EWC plays the host school at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a game against Williston State College at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Lady Lancers come back to their home floor Monday against Central Wyoming College, starting at 5:30 p.m.
