POWELL – The Eastern Wyoming College women opened the Region IX North Division play last week with mixed results.
On Wednesday evening, the Lady Lancers fell to Sheridan College, 73-65, and on Saturday, Eastern Wyoming routed Northwest College, 99-63.
Against Sheridan, the Lady Lancers held an early 17-15 lead after the first quarter, and EWC looked to grow the lead into the second quarter
Eastern Wyoming opened the quarter on a 6-0 run, but the Lady Generals held the visitors to only four points the remainder of the half.
For the game, Sheridan held EWC to 36 percent shooting, while the Lady Generals shot 55 percent.
The Lady Lancers had trio of players crack double digits in the scoring column.
Freshman Montse Gutierrez Ibanez led EWC with 14 points, while freshman Ane Esnal Aguirre and sophomore Mar Bastida Olivares added 12 points each.
On Saturday, the Lady Lancers made the long haul to Powell and came away with a 36-point victory.
Eastern Wyoming never trailed in the win.
With the game tied at 27 late in the first half, Ibanez connected on a 3-pointer, and the Lady Lancers outscored the Lady Trappers 69-36 over the remainder of the game.
Aguirre led the Lady Lancers with 18 points, while freshman Raleigh Basart added 16. Ibanez and Olivares had 14 each, while freshman Emma Strom tossed in 10.
The Lady Lancers shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor, while holding Northwest to 30 percent.
EWC (8-8 overall and 1-1 in the Region IX North) host Gillette College (16-2 and 2-1) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Central Wyoming College (4-11 and 0-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
