Lady Lancers get on roll with three wins

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers defended their home floor this week, snagging three wins to up their win streak to four, racking up more than 80 points in each contest.

EWC 85, McCook 69

The Lady Lancers came out of the gates hot. After the game was tied at seven, EWC started pouring on the points and a bucket by Emily Buchanan late in the first quarter gave the Lady Lancers a 21-16 lead. In the second, McCook knotted the game at 27, but EWC again went on a run, taking a 43-35 lead into intermission.

In the third quarter, the Lady Lancers ran the score up to double-digits, before McCook trimmed that lead to seven points (57-50) with three minutes to go in the third. At the end of the quarter, EWC held a 61-52 advantage. A huge fourth quarter (24-17) gave EWC the 16-point win.

¬¬Lauren O’Connell as the top scorer for EWC, turning in 19 points, including six points from behind the arc. She also had eight boards, five assists, two steals and a block.

Nicole Cutler chipped in 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting, finishing her stat line with three boards. Abril Rexach Roure accounted for 12 points, four rebounds, two steals and a team-high seven assists.

Pamela Bethel recorded another double-double on the season, racking up 10 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and three of the team’s six blocks.

Cathlyn Knutson came off the bench and racked up nine points, all of which came from three-point land, where she shot 3-of-6. She also had six rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals. Buchanan turned in six points, while Ines Salat Margarit and Morning Gambler combined for seven points, five boards and three assists. Ijeoma Ezikeolisa and Kelliann Raff rounded out the scoring with two points apiece, combining for six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

EWC 83, North Platte 59

After a back-and-forth opening to the contest, the Lady Lancers built a 22-17 lead after the first frame. EWC grew their lead to 42-28 in the second quarter, with North Platte trimming the advantage to 42-33 at intermission.

EWC exploded for 23 points in the third quarter, while limiting the Lady Knights to seven points. A buzzer-beating bucket off the glass by Knutson gave the Lady Lancers a 65-40 lead with a quarter to go. The visitors outscored EWC 19-18 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.

For the second game in a row, O’Connell topped the scoring sheet with 21 points, with six coming from behind the arc. She finished the day with four boards, four assists a steal and a block.

Bethel recorded a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, including seven on offense, two assists and team-highs with six steals and five blocks. Rexach rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Rounding out the starters, Cutler and Macie Mackey combined for 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal.

Buchanan was the top contributor off the bench with eight points, two rebounds, an assist and a block. Knutson chipped in seven points and two assists, while Margarit racked up five points, three boards, and two assists. Ezikeolisa, Raff and Kaylynn Jefferson completed the scoring for EWC, combining for six points, nine boards, an assist and three steals.

EWC 82, Sheridan 58

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Lady Lancers pounced on the Lady Generals in the second to put the game out of reach. In the first, EWC secured a 22-21 lead, before the home team upped its scoring output to 24 points in the second quarter, while limiting Sheridan to 11 points to go into halftime up 46-32.

In the second half, the Lady Lancers continued to increase their lead, holding the Lady Generals to seven points while pouring in 19 of their own. Sheridan had the upper hand in the fourth, outscoring EWC 19-17, but it was not enough to make up the difference.

For the 13th game in a row, Bethel notched a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, both of which were team-highs. She also had three blocks and three steals. She shot perfect from the line (7-of-7) and 50 percent from the floor (6-of-12).

Rexach contributed 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists, which was a team-high. Knutson was the final Lady Lancer in double-figures, accounting for 12 points, three boards and two steals.

O’Connell, with eight points, Mackey, with five points, and Cutler, with four points, rounded out the starting five for the Lady Lancers. The trio also combined for eight rebounds, five assists, a steal and a block.

Other than Knutson, Margarit had the biggest impact off the bench, totaling seven points, a rebound, six assists and a steal. Buchanan chipped in five points, and a rebound, while Raff and Ezikeolisa combined for two points, 11 rebounds and three steals.

The Lady Lancers now have a 12-8 record. They return to their home floor Thursday to take on Northeastern Junior College at 6 p.m.
