Lady Lancers escape first-quarter hole

CHEYENNE – After falling behind 23-14 after the first frame, the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers racked up 20 or more points in the remaining three quarters Wednesday to beat Laramie County Community College 83-69.

EWC came out of the gates slow, facing a nine-point deficit after the first 10 minutes of action. The Lady Lancers quickly reversed their fortunes by outscoring LCCC 23-8 in the second quarter to go into halftime up 37-31.

Coming out for the second half, the Lady Golden Eagles kept things tight, scoring 20 points to the Lady Lancers’ 21, sending the game to the fourth with the score at 58-51. EWC managed to close the door in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 25-18 in the final 10 minutes of action.

Lauren O’Connell had another solid night from behind the arc, knocking down 5-of-8 from three-point land on her way to 22 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

Pamela Bethel recorded another double-double, putting up 18 points and bringing down 17 boards. Along with an assist, Bethel was a defensive stalwart, racking up three steals and five blocks, both of which were team-highs.

Abril Rexach Roure poured in 15 points in the win on 7-of-12 shooting, along with four boards and a team-high seven assists. Emily Buchanan came off the bench and rounded out the scorers in double-figures, notching 11 points, including five from the charity stripe, three rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Joining O’Connell, Bethel and Rexach in the starting-five, Macie Mackey and Nicole Cutler combined for 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Coming off the bench, Cathlyn Knutson and Ines Salat Margarit combined for seven points, while Ijeoma Ezikeolisa recorded four boards.

The win brings the Lady Lancers up to 15-10 on the year. Their next time on the hardwood comes on the road against Trinidad State Junior College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
