TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College women’s basketball team swept Laramie County Community College and Central Wyoming College, pushing the Lady Lancer winning streak to five straight in Region IX action.
On Wednesday, the Lady Lancers overcame a 19-8 first quarter deficit to defeat the Lady Golden Eagles, 67-56.
Laramie County had an 11-0 run in the first quarter to push its lead to double-digits late in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer from freshman Emma Strom put a halt to the run, swinging the momentum back in the home team’s favor.
Less than two minutes into the second quarter, sophomore Paula Martinez Sanz tied the game at 20, but it wasn’t until freshman Emilia Axelsson drained back-to-back 3-pointers to break the tie and give the Lady Lancers the lead for the first time since the opening seconds of the game.
Eastern Wyoming never trailed for the remainder of the game.
Sanz led the team with 19 points, while Freshman Ane Esnal Aguirre added 13. Axelsson had 11.
On Saturday, Aguirre knocked down the go ahead bucket with 29 seconds left to put the Lady Lancers in front 61-60.
Aguirre added two free throws in the closing seconds to give her team a 63-60 victory.
The Lady Lancers found themselves down as many as nine in the second half before mounting the comeback.
Aguirre led EWC with 22 points, while Axelsson added 13.
The Lady Lancers (14-10 overall and 10-6 Region IX North) host No. 17-ranked Casper College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
