Lady Doggers unable to escape hole

MORRILL, Neb. – A strong first half by Morrill put the Lingle-Fort Laramie Lady Doggers in a hole they were unable to find a way out of, falling 69-45 on the road Tuesday.

The Lady Lions came out hot, pouring in 17 points in the first quarter, while limiting the Lady Doggers to five. In the second frame, both teams upped their scoring total by two points (19-7), which sent L-FL into intermission down 36-12.

In the second half, the Lady Doggers played Morrill evenly. L-FL put up 15 points to Morrill’s 14. The Lady Doggers racked up 18 points in the fourth, while the Lady Lions racked up 19 in the frame. After the two teams tied at 33 in the second half, Morrill walked away with the 69-45 win.

Jade Cooper topped the scoring sheet for the Lady Doggers, accounting for 16 points on the night, including seven from the free-throw line where she shot 7-of-9. She also finished with six rebounds and three assists.

Ashley Riley chipped in 11 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor. Her seven rebounds led L-FL and she also had two assists and all three of the team’s steals. Kaelyn Riley was not far behind in the scoring category, pouring in nine points and tallying two rebounds and an assist.

Kelcie Sargent, with six points, and Savannah Mirich, with two points, rounded out the scoring for the Lady Doggers. Mirich finished the game with six rebounds, while Sargent, Jessy White and Torey Bever combined for five rebounds and an assist.

The Lady Doggers’ record dropped to 5-7 on the season after the loss. They return to the floor with two games this weekend, starting with a road contest Friday against Burns at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, L-FL hosts Pine Bluffs at 2:30 p.m.
