PINE BLUFFS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie boys and girls track teams battled the cold and wind Thursday at the Pine Bluffs Invitational, with the girls taking fourth and the boys taking eighth in the team standings.

“Although the weather was a bit of a challenge, I felt that our athletes had a very good day,” coach Mike Lashley said. “Our girls placed in every event we entered, while our boys scored in every entered event except one. Team wise, you just cannot ask for much more than that.”

Kaelyn Riley splashed back onto the scene for the Lady Doggers after missing some time due to injury. She picked up the top spot in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.18 seconds. In the 200, she had the top qualifying time (28.49 seconds), but slid to second in the finals with a time of 28.56 seconds. In the triple jump, Riley took second with a 32-foot, 10.75-inch effort.

Riley was joined in the 200 by fellow Lady Dogger Shelby Heilbrun, who snagged fifth in the event with a time of 31.61 seconds. Heilbrun’s top finish of the day came in the high jump, where she cleared 4 feet, 8 inches to take third.

Also on the track, Jenna Kaufman’s best finish came in the 800, where her time of 2:48.87 put her fourth. She also took fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:11.00.

Jenny Manus was the final L-FL girl to place in an individual running event, taking seventh in the two-mile with a time of 15:03.13.

Manus, along with Heilbrun, Jordyn Gaspers and Kalli Nichol, had a time of 59.92 seconds in the 400-meter relay to finish third.

Kaylan Maez rounded out the top performances on the track. In the 100-meter hurdles, she turned in a time of 20.38 seconds to finish seventh. She finished in the same slot in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 55.92 seconds. Also in the pole vault, Maez took seventh after clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.

On top of being on the third-place 400-meter relay team, Gaspers placed in three field events, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the long jump, clearing 13 feet, 9.5 inches. She snagged fifth in the high jump with a 4-foot, 4-inch effort and took sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 28 feet, 7.5 inches.

Savannah Mirich was the top thrower for the L-FL girls. She took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 8.5 inches. Her 91-foot, 6-inch effort in the discus earned her seventh.

In the girls team race, L-FL took fourth with 75.5 points, narrowly edging out Saratoga’s 74 points. Host Pine Bluffs won the meet for the girls with 107.5 points. Burns, with 102 points, and Lusk, with 90 points, rounded out the top-three teams.

“We continue to make good progress, but we still have some work to do before regionals,” Lashley said.

Boys

Cole Shepardson had the best individual finish for the Dogger boys on the track, finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 43.45 seconds. He was also on the sixth-place 400-meter relay team, along with Hayden Hill, Cooper Hill and Rayden Alonzo, with the squad finishing in 49.44 seconds.

Kelly Peterson, as the only other individual performer on the track, turned in a time of 2:12.21 in the 800-meter run to take fourth. He was also joined by Gaven Niles and Hayden and Cooper Hill for the 1600-meter relay, with the Doggers taking third with a time of 4:01.89.

Hayden Hill turned in a third-place performance in the long jump after clearing 19 feet, 3 inches. Cooper Hill had a 17-foot, 10-inch effort to pick up sixth in the event. Caeden Riley rounded out the top field performers, snagging eighth in the discus with a throw of 113 feet, 8 inches.

The Doggers totaled 30 points to finish eighth, sandwiched between Encampment’s 38 points and Guernsey-Sunrise’s 22 points. Host Pine Bluffs won the boys team title with 149 points. Lusk, with 103 points, and Burns, with 94 points, completed the top-three teams.

The Doggers have a busy week. They compete in the Best in the West Classic on Wednesday in Scottsbluff, Neb. L-FL also has action Friday for the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper, followed by the Dennis Zowada Invitational in Lusk on Saturday.

“The coaching staff has asked our athletes to renew their focus on workouts for the next few weeks,” Lashley said. “We will then begin to taper our workouts as regionals and state approach.”
