Lady Doggers pick up three wins at tourney

BURNS – The Lingle-Fort Laramie High School girls’ basketball team went 3-1 at the 2A East Smackdown tournament over the weekend in a Southeast Quadrant versus Northeast Quadrant showdown.

On Friday, the Lady Doggers picked up wins over Wright and Big Horn.

Against Wright, LFL held the Wright Lady Panthers scoreless in the first quarter and to only three points in the second quarter en route to a 36-28 victory.

The Lady Doggers led 9-0 after one and 20-3 at halftime before Wright started its comeback attempt in the second half.

The Lady Panthers outscored LFL 25-16 in the second half.

Senior Ashlee Hattan led the team with 13 points, while senior Baylee Skinner added seven. Junior Natalie Speckner grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and dished out five assists.

As a team, Lingle had 24 steals, led by junior Holly Leiseth with four.

During Friday’s night cap, the Lady Doggers defeated the Big Horn Lady Rams 61-19.

Big Horn kept things close for a quarter as Lingle led 7-2 after eight minutes.

In the second quarter, LFL began to pull away, scoring 25 points and limiting the Lady Rams to only six points.

With a 32-8 lead at halftime, Lingle continued to pull away for the 42-point victory.

Hattan led the team with 10 points, while Skinner added nine points and five steals. Freshman Jordynn Speckner tossed in eight. Sophomore Brenly Shipp tallied a team-high 11 rebounds.

On Saturday, the Lady Doggers opened the day with a 48-39 loss to the Tongue River Lady Eagles.

Lingle led 19-17 at halftime, before Tongue River outscored the Lady Doggers 16-6 in the third quarter to pull away for the victory.

Hattan and Natalie Speckner led the team with 12 points each, while Leiseth grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

In the final game of the weekend, Lingle overcame a 13-3 first quarter deficit to cap off the weekend with a 49-41 win over the Sundance Lady Bulldogs.

Lingle trailed by double-digits after one quarter before returning the favor in the second quarter, outscoring Sundance 17-7 to tie the game at 20 going into half.

Over the final 16 minutes of the game, LFL outscore 29-21 to pull away for the eight-point win.

Freshman Skyla Wunder led the team with 16 points, while Natalie Speckner added 15 points, pulled down eight rebounds and recorded five steals.

The Lady Doggers (7-3) are back in action Friday in Lusk against Niobrara County (3-5). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
