Lady Doggers go 2-3 in Big Horn

BIG HORN – The Lingle-Fort Laramie High School volleyball team traveled to the Big Horn Invite last Friday and Saturday and picked up two wins.

Both wins came on Friday after an opening round loss to the Greybull Buffaloes.

Greybull handed the Lady Doggers a 25-16, 25-18 loss.

The other two pool play matches ended in victories for Lingle.

LFL breezed past the Burlington Huskies 25-13, 25-12 and defeated the Wright Panthers 25-21, 25-18.

The 2-1 record put the Lady Doggers as the No. 2 seed in the gold bracket for Saturday.

Lingle opened the bracket portion of the tournament against last season’s 2A state runner-up and tournament host, the Big Horn Lady Rams.

The Lady Doggers hung close throughout the first set, falling 25-19 before Big Horn pulled away in the second set for a 25-11 sweep of Lingle.

In the team’s final match of the weekend, the Lady Doggers fell to the Sundance Lady Bulldogs, 25-21, 25-17.

Over the course of the five matches, seniors Natalie Speckner and Leah Foster led the team in kills with 25 and 16, respectively. Sophomore Hallie Fuller tallied five blocks, while Speckner recorded a team-high 38 digs. Jordynn Speckner added 30 digs. Foster served up five aces and handed out 36 assists. Sophomore Skyla Wunder added 30 assists.

Despite picking up only two wins in Big Horn, LFL coach Chelsi Jackson said her team experienced growth.

“Even though it wasn’t the outcome we had hoped for there was some huge growth in the girls this weekend,” she said. “There was some very tough competition and the girls rose to the challenge. The girls made it into the gold bracket as a No. 2 seed and had a tough first game against the state runners-up the Big Horn Rams, but the girls went point for point with them and it was a very close game. This was exactly the type of tournament we needed to grow and get better, and it makes us very excited for what is to come.”

The Lady Doggers (5-6) heads to Guernsey on Friday to face the Lady Vikings (2-2). First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
