Lady Doggers fall in close battle with Hornets
LINGLE – The Lingle-Fort Laramie High School volleyball team fell to Pine Bluffs 3-1 in a 2A Southeast Conference matchup which went back-and-forth the entire match.
In the end, the visiting Lady Hornets topped the Lady Doggers, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22 on Thursday, Aug. 31.
In the opening set, Pine Bluffs raced out to a 10-2 lead, forcing Lingle to use a quick timeout.
Coming out of the break, the Lady Doggers chipped away at the deficit and tied the set at 17. The opening set was also tied at 18, 21 and 24. Lingle took a brief lead at 20-19, but the Lady Hornets used an ace serve to regain the lead at 21-20.
A kill by junior Brenly Shipp tied the game for the fourth time at 24, but Pine Bluffs capped off the set with two straight scores.
In the second set, Shipp gave the Lady Doggers an early 2-1 lead. The teams swapped the lead three times over the course of the set and neither team held a lead larger than three throughout the set until the very end.
Tied at 19, Lingle capped off the set, scoring six of the final seven points to tie the match at one.
In the third set, the Lady Doggers grabbed an early 7-3 lead courtesy of several mistakes by the visitors.
Pine Bluffs answered with a 5-1 spurt to tie the set at eight. It was the second of five ties in the third set.
Lingle led 21-18 after a kill from senior Natalie Speckner, but the Lady Hornets scored the next seven points to take the set win.
In the fourth set, Pine Bluffs jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but sophomore Jordynn Speckner tied the set at seven with a kill. It was in the midst of an 11-0 run which saw the Lady Doggers take a 12-7 lead.
Lingle held on to the lead until back-to-back aces by Pine Bluffs gave the visitors a 21-19 lead. It proved to be the final lead change of the evening.
Natalie Speckner and Shipp led LFL with 10 kills each, while sophomore Skyla Wunder and senior Leah Foster had four blocks each. Junior Kenzie Wilkins led the team with 21 digs, while Foster dished out 13 assists.
The Lady Doggers (3-3) head to the Big Horn Invite on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9.
